लङ्काकाण्ड 6.8

ईश्वर का भजन उसका कुशल सारथी है; वैराग्य ढाल है और संतोष तलवार।

Devotion to God is its skilled charioteer; detachment is its shield, and contentment its sword.

दान फरसा है, बुद्धि प्रचंड शक्ति-अस्त्र है और श्रेष्ठ अनुभूत ज्ञान कठोर धनुष है।

Giving is the battle-axe, intelligence the formidable lance, and excellent realized knowledge the sturdy bow.

निर्मल और स्थिर मन तरकश के समान है; मन का संयम, यम और नियम अनेक बाण हैं।

A pure, steady mind is like a quiver; mental restraint, ethical restraints, and disciplined observances are its many arrows.

ब्राह्मणों और गुरु का सम्मान-पूजन अभेद्य कवच है। इसके समान विजय का दूसरा उपाय नहीं है।

Reverence for Brahmins and the teacher is impenetrable armor. There is no other means of victory equal to this.

हे मित्र, जिसके पास ऐसा धर्ममय रथ है, उसे जीतने के लिए कहीं कोई शत्रु नहीं है।

Friend, whoever possesses such a chariot of righteousness has no enemy anywhere capable of defeating him.

वह वीर संसाररूपी अत्यंत दुर्जेय शत्रु को भी जीत सकता है—

That warrior can conquer even the exceedingly hard-to-conquer enemy of worldly existence—

—जिसके पास ऐसा दृढ़ रथ हो। हे स्थिरबुद्धि मित्र, सुनो।

—who possesses such a firm chariot. Listen, my steadfast-minded friend.

प्रभु के वचन सुनकर विभीषण प्रसन्न हुए और उनके कमल-समान चरण पकड़ लिए।

Hearing the Lord’s words, Vibhishana rejoiced and clasped his lotus-like feet.

हे कृपा और सुख के पुंज राम, आपने इस बहाने मुझे उपदेश दिया।

Rama, embodiment of compassion and joy, you have instructed me through this occasion.

उधर दस सिर वाला रावण ललकार रहा था और इधर अंगद तथा हनुमान।

On that side ten-headed Ravana was issuing challenges; on this side, Angada and Hanuman were doing so.

राक्षस, भालू और वानर अपने-अपने स्वामी की दुहाई देकर लड़ रहे थे।

The demons, bears, and monkeys fought, invoking the authority of their respective lords.
