जब रावण ने वह मायावी प्रपंच किया, तब भयानक जीव प्रकट हुए।

When Ravana performed that illusory trick, fierce creatures appeared.

वेताल, भूत और पिशाच हाथों में धनुष और नाराच बाण धारण किए हुए थे।

Vetalas, ghosts, and flesh-eating spirits held bows and iron arrows in their hands.

योगिनियाँ तलवारें पकड़े थीं और एक हाथ में मानव-खोपड़ी लिए थीं।

The yoginis held swords, with a human skull in one hand.

ताजा रक्त पीकर वे नाचतीं और बहुत गान करती थीं।

After drinking fresh blood, they danced and sang profusely.

वे भयानक स्वर में ‘पकड़ो! मारो!’ कहती थीं; उनकी ध्वनि चारों ओर भर रही थी।

They cried fiercely, ‘Seize! Kill!’ Their noise filled every direction.

वे मुँह फैलाकर खाने को दौड़ती थीं; तब वानर भागने लगे।

They rushed with gaping mouths to devour them; then the monkeys began to flee.

वानर भागकर जहाँ भी जाते, वहाँ आग जलती देखते थे।

Wherever the monkeys fled, they saw fire blazing there.

वानर और भालू व्याकुल हो गए; फिर रेत बरसने लगी।

The monkeys and bears became distraught; then sand began to rain down.

वानरों को हर ओर थका और स्तब्ध करके दस सिर वाला रावण फिर गरजा।

After exhausting and bewildering the monkeys everywhere, ten-headed Ravana roared again.

लक्ष्मण और वानरराज सुग्रीव सहित सभी वीर सुध-बुध खो बैठे।

All the warriors, including Lakshmana and the monkey king Sugriva, lost their senses.

‘हाय राम! हाय रघुनाथ!’ कहकर वीर योद्धा हाथ मलते थे।

Crying ‘Alas, Rama! Alas, Lord of Raghu’s line!’ the warriors wrung their hands.

इस प्रकार सारी सेना का बल तोड़कर रावण ने फिर छल रचा।

Having thus broken the strength of the entire army, Ravana devised another deception.

उसने अनेक मायावी हनुमान प्रकट किए; वे पत्थर पकड़े हुए दौड़े।

He conjured many illusory Hanumans, who rushed forward holding stones.

उन्होंने जाकर चारों दिशाओं में दल बनाकर राम को घेर लिया।

They went and surrounded Rama, forming ranks on all four sides.

‘मारो! पकड़ो! जाने न पाए!’ कहते हुए वे पूँछ उठाकर दाँत कटकटाते थे।

Crying ‘Kill! Seize! Do not let him escape!’ they raised their tails and gnashed their teeth.

दसों दिशाओं में लंगूर दिखाई दे रहे थे और उनके बीच कोसलराज राम थे।

Monkeys stood in all ten directions, with Rama, king of Kosala, in their midst.

उनके बीच कोसलराज राम के सुंदर श्याम शरीर ने अनुपम शोभा पाई।

Amid them, the beautiful dark body of Rama, king of Kosala, shone splendidly.

मानो किसी ऊँचे तमाल वृक्ष के चारों ओर अनेक इंद्रधनुषों की सुंदर बाड़ बना दी गई हो।

It was as though a fine enclosure of many rainbows had been made around a tall tamala tree.

प्रभु को देखकर देवताओं के हृदय में हर्ष और विषाद दोनों हुए; वे ‘जय! जय! जय!’ कहते थे।

Seeing the Lord, the gods felt both joy and sorrow in their hearts and cried, ‘Victory! Victory! Victory!’

रघुवीर राम ने क्रोध करके एक ही बाण से पलक झपकते माया मिटा दी।

In anger, Rama, hero of Raghu’s line, dispelled the illusion with a single arrow in the blink of an eye.

माया मिटने पर वानर और भालू प्रसन्न हुए; सब वृक्ष और पर्वत पकड़कर लौट आए।

When the illusion vanished, the monkeys and bears rejoiced; all returned carrying trees and mountains.

राम ने बाणों की झड़ी छोड़ी; रावण की भुजाएँ और सिर फिर धरती पर गिर पड़े।

Rama released a volley of arrows; Ravana’s arms and heads fell to the earth again.

श्रीराम और रावण के युद्ध का चरित यदि अनेक कल्पों तक गाया जाए—

Even if the account of Shri Rama’s battle with Ravana were sung for many cosmic ages—

—सौ शेष, सरस्वतियाँ, वेद और कवि भी गाएँ, तो भी वे उसका अंत नहीं पा सकेंगे।

—even a hundred Sheshas, Sarasvatis, Vedas, and poets would still be unable to reach its end.
