मेरा हाथ नहीं चलता, क्रोध छाती को जलाता है; राजाओं का संहार करने वाला मेरा फरसा कुंठित हो गया है।

My hand will not move, and anger burns my chest; my king-slaying axe has become blunted.

विधाता प्रतिकूल हो गया है, मेरा स्वभाव बदल गया है। मेरे हृदय में कभी कृपा कैसे आ सकती है?

Fate has turned against me, and my nature has changed. How could compassion ever arise in my heart?

आज दया ने मुझे असहनीय दुःख सहने को विवश किया है। यह सुनकर सुमित्रा-पुत्र लक्ष्मण हँसे और सिर झुकाया।

Today compassion has made me endure unbearable pain. Hearing this, Lakshmana, Sumitra’s son, laughed and bowed his head.

हे महाशय, आप तो कृपा की मूर्ति और बड़े अनुकूल हैं! बोलते समय आपके वचनों से मानो फूल झरते हैं!

Sir, you are kindness embodied and so gracious! As you speak, flowers seem to fall from your words!

हे मुनि, यदि आपकी कृपा से ही शरीर जलने लगेंगे, तो क्रोध होने पर विधाता ही शरीर की रक्षा करें!

Sage, if your compassion itself makes bodies burn, may the Creator protect them when you grow angry!

हे जनक, देखो, यह बालक हठी है। यह मूर्ख यमपुरी को अपना घर बनाना चाहता है।

Janaka, look at this obstinate boy! The fool wants to make Yama’s city his home.
