अयोध्याकाण्ड 2.46

सुनकर सभी नर-नारी ऐसे व्याकुल हो गए जैसे दावानल देखकर लताएँ और वृक्ष।

Hearing it, all men and women became distraught, like creepers and trees confronted with a forest fire.

जो जहाँ यह सुनता है, वहीं अपना सिर पीटता है। भारी विषाद है और धीरज नहीं बँधता।

Whoever hears it, wherever they are, beats their head in grief. The sorrow is immense, and no composure can be found.

मुँह सूख रहे हैं, आँखों से आँसू बह रहे हैं, और शोक हृदय में समा नहीं रहा।

Mouths grow dry, eyes stream with tears, and hearts cannot contain the grief.

मानो करुण रस की सेना बाजे बजाते हुए अवध में आ उतरी हो।

It was as though the army of pathos had descended upon Ayodhya with instruments sounding.
