उत्तरकाण्ड 7.11

हे पक्षिराज, कहिए, ऐसा कौन अभागा है जो कामधेनु छोड़कर गधी की सेवा करे?

Tell me, king of birds, who would be so unfortunate as to abandon the wish-fulfilling divine cow and serve a she-ass?

प्रेम में मग्न मुझे और कुछ अच्छा नहीं लगता था; बार-बार पढ़ाते-पढ़ाते पिता थककर हार गए।

Absorbed in love, I found nothing else appealing; my father grew weary and gave up after repeatedly teaching me.

जब माता-पिता मृत्यु को प्राप्त हुए, तब मैं जनों के रक्षक राम का भजन करने वन चला गया।

When my parents died, I went to the forest to worship Rama, protector of his people.

वन में जहाँ-जहाँ श्रेष्ठ मुनि मिलते, उनके आश्रम में जाकर मैं सिर झुकाता था।

Wherever I found great sages in the forest, I visited their hermitages and bowed my head.

हे पक्षिराज, मैं उनसे राम के गुणों की कथा पूछता; वे कहते और मैं हर्षित होकर सुनता था।

O king of birds, I asked them for accounts of Rama’s virtues; they spoke, and I listened joyfully.

मैं हरि के गुणों का वर्णन सुनता हुआ घूमता था; शिव की कृपा से मेरी गति में कोई बाधा नहीं थी।

I roamed about listening to accounts of Hari’s virtues; through Shiva’s grace, my movement was unhindered.
