उत्तरकाण्ड 7.105

हे गरुड़, सुनिए! मैं दीन, मलिन, निर्धन और दुखी अवस्था में उज्जैन गया।

Listen, Garuda! I went to Ujjain, wretched, unclean, penniless, and distressed.

कुछ समय बीतने पर मुझे थोड़ी संपत्ति मिली। वहाँ मैं फिर शिव की सेवा करने लगा।

After some time passed, I acquired a little wealth. There I again began serving Shiva.

एक वेदज्ञ ब्राह्मण सदा शिव की पूजा करता था; उसका कोई दूसरा कार्य नहीं था।

A Brahmin versed in the Vedas constantly worshipped Shiva; he had no other occupation.

वह अत्यंत सज्जन और परम आध्यात्मिक सत्य का ज्ञाता था। वह शिव का उपासक था, किंतु हरि की निंदा नहीं करता था।

He was deeply virtuous and knew the highest spiritual truth. He worshipped Shiva but did not disparage Hari.

मैं कपट सहित उसकी सेवा करता था। वह ब्राह्मण अत्यंत दयालु और नीति-सदाचार का धाम था।

I served him with deceit in my heart. That Brahmin was compassionate and a great embodiment of ethical conduct.

मुझे बाहर से विनम्र देखकर वे स्वामी ब्राह्मण मुझे पुत्र की तरह पढ़ाते थे।

Seeing my outward humility, that Brahmin master taught me as he would a son.
