जहाँ कहीं घूमते हुए राक्षस मिलते, सभी मिलकर उन्हें घेर लेते और बहुत तरह से नचाते थे।

Wherever they found roaming demons, they all surrounded them and made them dance in many ways.

दाँतों से उनकी नाक और कान काटकर, प्रभु की सुकीर्ति सुनाते और फिर उन्हें जाने देते थे।

After biting off their noses and ears, they proclaimed the Lord’s good fame and then let them go.

जिनकी नाक और कान काटे गए थे, उन्होंने रावण को सारी बात बताई।

Those whose noses and ears had been cut off told Ravana everything.

समुद्र बाँधे जाने की बात कानों से सुनते ही दस-मुँह वाला रावण व्याकुल होकर बोल उठा।

On hearing that the ocean had been bridged, ten-headed Ravana exclaimed in agitation.

‘समुद्र—जल का भंडार, जलनिधि, जलधि, सिंधु, जल का स्वामी—बाँध दिया गया?’ रावण विस्मय में समुद्र के अनेक नाम गिनाता है।

‘The ocean—the store of waters, water-reservoir, sea, ocean, lord of waters—has been bridged?’ Ravana lists names of the ocean in astonishment.

‘क्या सचमुच जलनिधि, जल के स्वामी, उदधि, पयोधि, नदियों के स्वामी समुद्र को बाँध दिया गया?’ यह पिछली पंक्ति के विस्मित प्रश्न की निरंतरता है।

‘Truly—the water-reservoir, lord of waters, sea, ocean, lord of rivers—has been bridged?’ This continues the astonished question of the preceding line.
