हे राक्षसों के स्वामी, तुम सच कहते हो; सचमुच वानर ने नगर जला दिया।

Lord of the demons, you speak truly; the monkey really did burn the city.

एक छोटा-सा वानर रावण का नगर जला दे—ऐसी बात सुनकर कौन उसे सच मानेगा?

A mere monkey burns Ravana’s city—who would hear such a claim and call it true?

हे रावण, जिसे तुमने बहुत बड़ा योद्धा कहकर सराहा, वह सुग्रीव का एक छोटा-सा हरकारा है।

Ravana, the one you praised as a mighty warrior is only a minor courier of Sugriva.

वह बहुत दौड़ता-फिरता है, योद्धा नहीं है; हमने उसी को खबर लेने भेजा था।

He runs about a great deal; he is no warrior. We sent that very one to gather news.

सच है, वानर ने स्वामी की आज्ञा पाए बिना नगर जला दिया।

It is true: the monkey burned the city without receiving his lord’s permission.

फिर वह सुग्रीव के पास नहीं गया; उसी के डर से छिपा रहा।

He did not return to Sugriva; out of fear of that, he remained in hiding.

हे दसकंठ, तुम सब सच कहते हो; सुनकर मुझे तनिक भी क्रोध नहीं होता।

Ten-necked Ravana, everything you say is true; hearing it, I feel no anger at all.

हमारी सेना में कोई ऐसा नहीं है जिसे तुमसे लड़ना शोभा दे।

There is no one in our army for whom fighting you would be fitting.

प्रेम और विरोध अपने समान व्यक्ति से करना चाहिए; नीति ऐसी ही है।

Friendship and enmity should be undertaken with an equal; such is the rule of conduct.

यदि सिंह मेंढकों का वध करे, तो क्या कोई उसे अच्छा कहेगा?

If a lion kills frogs, would anyone call that commendable?

यद्यपि तुम्हें मारने से राम के लिए छोटी बात और बड़ा दोष होगा—

Although killing you would diminish Rama’s stature and bring great blame—

फिर भी, हे दसकंठ, सुनो—क्षत्रिय जाति का क्रोध प्रचंड होता है।

Nevertheless, listen, ten-necked Ravana: the wrath of the warrior class is fierce.

वानर अंगद ने व्यंग्यपूर्ण उक्ति के धनुष से वचन-बाण चलाकर शत्रु का हृदय जला दिया।

With cutting speech as his bow and words as arrows, the monkey Angada scorched his enemy’s heart.

मानो योद्धा रावण प्रत्युत्तर रूपी सँड़सियों से उन बाणों को निकाल रहा हो।

It was as though the warrior Ravana were extracting those arrows with the tongs of his replies.

तब दस सिरों वाला रावण हँसकर बोला—वानर का एक बड़ा गुण है:

Then ten-headed Ravana laughed and said, “A monkey has one great virtue:

जो उसका पालन करता है, उसके हित के लिए वह अनेक उपाय करता है।

For whoever sustains him, he makes many efforts to further that person’s interests.”
