बालकाण्ड 1.78

ऋषियों ने वहाँ गौरी को ऐसा देखा, मानो तपस्या स्वयं मूर्त रूप में उपस्थित हो।

The sages saw Gauri there as though austerity itself had taken bodily form.

मुनि बोले, ‘सुनो, पर्वत की पुत्री! तुम किस कारण इतनी कठोर तपस्या कर रही हो?’

The sages said, ‘Listen, daughter of the mountain! Why are you undertaking such severe austerity?’

‘तुम किसकी आराधना करती हो और क्या चाहती हो? हमें अपना सच्चा अभिप्राय क्यों नहीं बताती?’

‘Whom do you worship, and what do you desire? Why not tell us your true purpose?’

‘कहते हुए मेरा मन बहुत संकोच करता है; मेरी मूर्खता सुनकर आप हँसेंगे।’ ‘बचत’ का पाठ अनिश्चित है; यह अनुवाद संभावित ‘बचन’ के आधार पर है।

‘My heart feels very hesitant to speak; you will laugh on hearing my foolishness.’ The reading ‘बचत’ is uncertain; this translation follows the possible intended reading ‘बचन’ (words).

‘मेरा मन हठ पर अड़ गया है और सीख नहीं सुनता; वह पानी पर दीवार उठाना चाहता है।’

‘My mind is set in its stubborn resolve and will not heed advice; it wants to build a wall upon water.’

‘नारद ने जो कहा, मैंने उसी को सत्य माना; मैं बिना पंखों के उड़ना चाहती हूँ।’

‘I have accepted what Narada said as true; I wish to fly without wings.’
