तीनों भाइयों ने अनेक प्रकार की तपस्या की। वह इतनी कठोर थी कि उसका वर्णन नहीं किया जा सकता।

All three brothers performed various austerities, so severe that they cannot be described.

उनकी तपस्या देखकर ब्रह्मा निकट आए और बोले, ‘प्रिय पुत्र, वर माँगो; मैं प्रसन्न हूँ।’

Seeing their austerities, Brahma approached and said, ‘Dear child, ask for a boon; I am pleased.’

रावण ने विनती करके ब्रह्मा के चरण पकड़ लिए और कहा, ‘हे जगत के स्वामी, मेरी बात सुनिए।’

Ravana offered a supplication, clasped Brahma’s feet, and said, ‘Lord of the world, hear my words.’

‘वानर और मनुष्य—इन दो जातियों को छोड़कर, किसी के मारने से मेरी मृत्यु न हो।’

‘May I not die at anyone’s hands, except those of monkeys and humans.’

‘ऐसा ही हो; तुमने बड़ी तपस्या की है।’ मैंने और ब्रह्मा ने मिलकर उसे वह वर दिया।

‘So be it; you have performed great austerities.’ Brahma and I together granted him that boon.

फिर प्रभु ब्रह्मा कुंभकर्ण के पास गए। उसे देखकर उनके मन में विस्मय हुआ।

Then Lord Brahma went to Kumbhakarna. Seeing him, he felt astonishment.
