दस हजार वर्षों तक उन्होंने वह वायु-आहार भी छोड़ दिया; दोनों एक-एक पैर पर खड़े रहे।

For ten thousand years they gave up even that sustenance of air; both stood on one foot each.

ब्रह्मा और विष्णु उनकी अपार तपस्या देखकर अनेक बार मनु के पास आए।

Seeing their immense austerity, Brahma and Vishnu came to Manu many times.

उन्होंने ‘वर माँगो’ कहकर अनेक प्रकार से लुभाया, किंतु अत्यंत धीर दोनों तपस्वी विचलित किए जाने पर भी विचलित नहीं हुए।

They enticed them in many ways, saying, ‘Ask for a boon,’ but the steadfast ascetics did not waver despite attempts to move them.

उनके शरीर केवल हड्डियों के रह गए, फिर भी मन में तनिक भी पीड़ा नहीं थी।

Their bodies were reduced to mere bones, yet there was not the slightest anguish in their minds.

सर्वज्ञ प्रभु ने तपस्वी राजा और रानी को अपना सेवक तथा केवल उन्हीं पर आश्रित जान लिया।

The all-knowing Lord recognized the ascetic king and queen as his own servants, relying on him alone.

‘वर माँगो, माँगो’—ऐसी आकाशवाणी हुई, जो अत्यंत गंभीर और कृपा के अमृत से सनी थी।

‘Ask, ask for a boon’—a voice sounded from the sky, profoundly resonant and steeped in the nectar of compassion.
