प्रसन्न होकर यह वरदान दें कि साधुओं का समाज मेरी कविता का सम्मान करे।

Be pleased and grant this boon: may the assembly of virtuous people honor my poetry.

जिस काव्य-रचना का सुज्ञानी आदर नहीं करते, उसे रचने में अपरिपक्व कवि व्यर्थ श्रम करते हैं।

When the discerning do not esteem a composition, the immature poets who create it labor in vain.

वही कीर्ति, कविता और संपत्ति अच्छी है जो गंगा के समान सबके लिए हितकारी हो।

Only that fame, poetry, and prosperity is good which, like the Ganges, benefits everyone.

राम की कीर्ति सुंदर है, पर मेरी कविता अनगढ़ है; इस असंगति की मुझे ऐसी चिंता है।

Rama’s renown is glorious, but my poetry is uncouth; this mismatch causes me apprehension.

आपकी कृपा से वह भी मेरे लिए सहज संभव है, जैसे रेशमी कपड़े के साथ टाट की सिलाई भी सुंदर लगती है।

Through your grace, even that is readily possible for me, just as coarse sackcloth looks pleasing when stitched with silk.

सुज्ञानी उसी सरल कविता और निर्मल कीर्ति का आदर करते हैं—

The discerning esteem that simple poetry and spotless renown—

जिसे सुनकर शत्रु भी अपना स्वाभाविक वैर भूलकर प्रशंसा करते हैं।

Which even enemies praise on hearing it, forgetting their natural hostility.

वह निर्मल बुद्धि के बिना नहीं होता, और मेरी बुद्धि का बल बहुत कम है।

That cannot be achieved without a pure intellect, and my intellectual strength is very slight.

कृपा करें कि मैं हरि का यश कह सकूँ; मैं बार-बार विनती करता हूँ।

Show grace so that I may recount Hari’s glory; I entreat you again and again.

हे कवियों और विद्वानों, आप रघुवर के चरित्ररूपी मानस सरोवर के सुंदर हंस हैं।

O poets and scholars, you are graceful swans in the Manasa lake of Rama’s deeds.

इस बालक की विनती सुनकर और उसकी शुभ रुचि देखकर मुझ पर कृपालु हों।

Hear this child’s plea, recognize his worthy inclination, and be gracious to me.

मैं उन मुनि वाल्मीकि के चरण-कमलों को प्रणाम करता हूँ जिन्होंने रामायण की रचना की—

I bow to the lotus feet of the sage Valmiki, who composed the Ramayana—

वह रामायण खर के वर्णन सहित भी अत्यंत कोमल और सुंदर है, तथा दूषण के वर्णन सहित भी दोषरहित है।

That Ramayana, though containing Khara, is delicate and beautiful, and though containing Dushana, is free from faults.

मैं चारों वेदों को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जो संसाररूपी समुद्र में जहाज के समान हैं।

I bow to all four Vedas, which are like ships upon the ocean of worldly existence.

रघुवर के निर्मल यश का वर्णन करते हुए जिन्हें स्वप्न में भी खेद नहीं होता।

They feel no distress, even in dreams, while describing Rama’s spotless glory.

मैं ब्रह्मा के चरणों की धूल को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जिन्होंने संसाररूपी समुद्र बनाया, जिसमें—

I bow to the dust of Brahma’s feet; he created the ocean of worldly existence, in which—

संत अमृत, चंद्रमा और कामधेनु के समान, तथा दुष्ट विष और मदिरा के समान प्रकट हुए।

The virtuous appeared like nectar, the moon, and the wish-giving cow, while the wicked appeared like poison and liquor.

देवताओं, ब्राह्मणों, विद्वानों और ग्रहों के चरणों की वंदना करके मैं हाथ जोड़कर कहता हूँ—

Bowing to the feet of the gods, Brahmins, learned people, and planetary deities, I say with folded hands—

प्रसन्न होकर मेरे सभी सुंदर मनोरथ पूरे करें।

Be pleased and fulfill all my worthy aspirations.
