घर श्मशान जैसे और परिजन मानो भूत जैसे लगते हैं; पुत्र, हितैषी और मित्र मानो यमदूत हों।

Homes seem like cremation grounds and relatives like ghosts; sons, well-wishers, and friends seem like messengers of death.

बागों में पेड़ और बेलें मुरझा रही हैं; नदियाँ और सरोवर देखे नहीं जाते।

Trees and creepers in the gardens are withering; the rivers and lakes are unbearable to look at.

घोड़े, हाथी, करोड़ों पाले हुए क्रीड़ामृग, नगर के पशु, चातक और मोर—

Horses, elephants, countless pet deer kept for pleasure, the city’s animals, rain-calling cuckoos, and peacocks—

कोयल, चक्रवाक, तोते, मैना, सारस, हंस और चकोर।

Cuckoos, ruddy shelducks, parrots, mynas, cranes, swans, and chukar partridges.
