राम के विनम्र, मधुर वचन माता कौसल्या के हृदय में तीर जैसे चुभे।

Rama’s humble, sweet words pierced mother Kaushalya’s heart like arrows.

शांत, शीतल वाणी सुनकर वे सहम गईं और मुरझा गईं, जैसे वर्षा का पानी पड़ने पर जवास का पौधा सूख जाता है।

Hearing his gentle, soothing words, she became frightened and withered, like the javasa plant when rainwater falls upon it.

उनके हृदय का दुःख कहा नहीं जा सकता; वे मानो सिंह की गर्जना सुनकर भयभीत हुई हिरनी थीं।

The sorrow in her heart cannot be expressed; she was like a doe hearing a lion’s roar.

उनकी आँखें आँसुओं से भर गईं और शरीर थर-थर काँपने लगा, मानो मछली माज नामक विष खाकर व्याकुल हो गई हो।

Her eyes filled with tears and her body trembled, like a fish distressed after swallowing a fish-poisoning substance called maaj.

धैर्य सँभालकर और पुत्र का मुख देखकर माता भावावेश से रुंधे हुए स्वर में बोलती हैं।

Gathering courage and looking at her son’s face, the mother speaks in a voice choked with emotion.

बेटा, तुम पिता को प्राणों के समान प्रिय हो; वे तुम्हारे आचरण को देखकर नित्य प्रसन्न होते हैं।

Son, you are as dear to your father as his own life; he rejoices daily in seeing your conduct.
