व्याकुल राजा दशरथ ‘राम, राम’ रट रहे हैं, मानो पंखों के बिना कोई पक्षी बेहाल हो।

Distraught King Dasharatha keeps repeating “Rama, Rama,” like a helpless bird without wings.

वे मन ही मन कामना करते हैं कि भोर न हो और कोई जाकर राम से यह बात न कहे।

Inwardly he wishes that dawn would not come and that no one would go and tell Rama about this.

हे सूर्य, रघुकुल के गुरु, उदय मत हो; अयोध्या को देखकर तुम्हारे हृदय में पीड़ा होगी।

O Sun, revered guide of Raghu’s lineage, do not rise; seeing Ayodhya will bring anguish to your heart.

विधाता ने राजा के प्रेम और कैकेयी की कठोरता—दोनों को उनकी चरम सीमा तक रच दिया।

The Creator fashioned both the king’s love and Kaikeyi’s hardness at their utmost limits.

राजा विलाप करते रहे और भोर हो गई; द्वार पर वीणा, बाँसुरी और शंख की ध्वनि होने लगी।

As the king lamented, dawn arrived; the sounds of lutes, flutes, and conches arose at the doorway.

भाट प्रशस्तियाँ पढ़ते हैं और गायक गुण गाते हैं; उन्हें सुनकर राजा को लगता है मानो बाण लग रहे हों।

Bards recite praises and singers sing of virtues; hearing them, the king feels as though arrows are striking him.
