राजा दशरथ ने प्राण देकर प्रेम का प्रण निभाया; माता कैकेयी की कुमति का सारा संसार साक्षी है।

King Dasharatha upheld his pledge of love by dying; the whole world witnesses mother Kaikeyi’s misguided thinking.

व्याकुल माताएँ देखी नहीं जातीं; नगर के स्त्री-पुरुष असह्य संताप में जल रहे हैं।

The distraught mothers are unbearable to behold; the city’s men and women burn with unbearable anguish.

मैं ही सारे अनर्थों की जड़ हूँ; यह सुनकर और समझकर मैंने सारी पीड़ाएँ सह लीं।

I myself am the root of all these calamities; hearing and understanding this, I endured every pang.

मैंने सुना कि श्रीराम मुनि का वेश धारण करके लक्ष्मण और सीता के साथ वन चले गए।

I heard that Rama departed for the forest with Lakshmana and Sita, dressed as an ascetic.

वे बिना जूतों के पैदल गए; शिव साक्षी हैं कि इस आघात के बाद भी मैं जीवित रहा।

They went on foot without shoes; Shiva is witness that I remained alive even after this blow.

फिर निषादराज का प्रेम देखकर भी मेरा वज्र-जैसा कठोर हृदय दो टुकड़े नहीं हुआ।

Then, even on seeing the Nishada chief’s love, my thunderbolt-hard heart did not split in two.
