वसंत ऋतु थी और शीतल, मंद, सुगंधित हवा बह रही थी; सबके लिए चारों पुरुषार्थ सुलभ थे।

It was spring, and a cool, gentle, fragrant breeze blew; all four aims of life were readily available to everyone.

मालाएँ, चंदन, स्त्रियाँ आदि भोग-साधन देखकर लोग आनंद और आश्चर्य के वश में हो गए।

Seeing garlands, sandalwood, women, and other sources of enjoyment, the people were overcome with joy and wonder.

संपत्ति चकवी थी, भरत चकवा थे और मुनि की आज्ञा उन्हें सँभालनेवाली थी।

The wealth was the female chakravaka bird, Bharata the male, and the sage’s command their keeper.

उस रखवाले ने उस रात दोनों को आश्रम-रूपी पिंजरे में रखा, और भोर हो गई।

That keeper held the two in the cage-like hermitage that night, until dawn came.
