राम ने कभी किसी दुःख का नाम भी कानों से नहीं सुना; राजा उन्हें जीवनरूपी वृक्ष की तरह सँभालते थे।

Rama had never even heard of any sorrow; the king tended him like the tree of his own life.

जिस तरह पलकें आँखों को और सर्प अपनी मणि को सँभालता है, उसी तरह सभी माताएँ राम को दिन-रात सँभालती थीं।

As eyelids guard the eyes and a serpent guards its jewel, all his mothers cared for Rama day and night.

वही राम अब वन में पैदल घूमते हैं और कंद, मूल, फल तथा फूल खाकर रहते हैं।

That very Rama now wanders the forest on foot, living on tubers, roots, fruits, and flowers.

अमंगल की जड़ कैकेयी को धिक्कार है! वह अपने प्राणप्रिय पति के विरुद्ध हो गई।

Shame on Kaikeyi, the root of misfortune! She turned against her husband, dear as life itself.

मुझ पापों के समुद्र, अभागे को बार-बार धिक्कार है, जिसके कारण यह सारा अनर्थ हुआ।

Shame, shame on me, an ocean of sin and ill-fated, for whose sake all this calamity occurred.

विधाता ने मुझे कुल का कलंक बनाकर जन्म दिया, और कुमाता ने मुझे अपने स्वामी का द्रोही बना दिया।

The Creator made me a disgrace to my lineage, and my wicked mother made me a betrayer of my lord.
