हाट और रास्ते देखे नहीं जाते थे; मानो नगर में दसों दिशाओं में आग लगी हो।

पुत्र के आने की खबर सुनकर कैकेय की पुत्री कैकेयी हर्षित हुई—वह सूर्यवंशरूपी कमल के लिए चाँदनी जैसी थी।

Hearing that her son was arriving, Kaikeyi, daughter of the king of Kekaya, rejoiced—she was like moonlight to the lotus of the solar dynasty.

आरती सजाकर वह प्रसन्न होकर उठी और दौड़ी; द्वार पर ही भरत से मिलकर उन्हें भवन में ले आई।

Preparing the ceremonial welcome lamp, she rose joyfully and hurried out; meeting Bharata at the very doorway, she brought him into the palace.

भरत ने परिवार को दुःखी देखा, मानो पाले ने कमलों के वन को नष्ट कर दिया हो।

Bharata saw the family stricken with grief, as though frost had destroyed a grove of lotuses.

कैकेयी इस तरह प्रसन्न थी, मानो कोई किरात स्त्री वन में आग लगाकर खुश हो रही हो।

Kaikeyi was happy in this manner, like a Kirata woman rejoicing after setting the forest ablaze.

पुत्र को शोकयुक्त देखकर वह अपना मन दबाकर अपने मायके की कुशल पूछने लगी।

Seeing her son sorrowful, she suppressed her own feelings and asked about the well-being of her parental home.
