इस प्रकार रास्ते में पछताते हुए सुमंत्र का रथ शीघ्र ही तमसा नदी के तट पर आ पहुँचा।

As Sumantra lamented along the way, his chariot soon reached the bank of the Tamasa River.

सुमंत्र ने विनय करके निषादों को विदा किया। वे उनके पैरों पर गिरकर, शोक से व्याकुल होकर लौट गए।

Sumantra courteously bade the Nishadas farewell. They fell at his feet and returned, distraught with grief.

नगर में प्रवेश करते हुए मंत्री सुमंत्र संकोच और लज्जा से भर गए, मानो उन्होंने गुरु, ब्राह्मण या गाय को मार डाला हो।

As he entered the city, the minister Sumantra felt ashamed and hesitant, as though he had killed a spiritual teacher, a Brahmin, or a cow.

सुमंत्र ने पेड़ के नीचे बैठकर दिन बिताया; तब साँझ के समय उन्हें प्रवेश का अवसर मिला।

Sumantra spent the day sitting beneath a tree; then, at dusk, he found an opportunity to enter.

उन्होंने अँधेरे में अयोध्या में प्रवेश किया और रथ को द्वार पर छोड़कर राजभवन के भीतर गए।

He entered Ayodhya in the darkness and, leaving the chariot at the gate, went inside the palace.

जिन-जिन लोगों को यह समाचार सुनने को मिला, वे राजा के द्वार पर रथ देखने आए।

All those who heard the news came to the king’s gate to see the chariot.
